CTE Advisory Committee

Experienced Career and Technical Education teachers and administrators serve on South’s Advisory Committee, which oversees the program and is instrumental in its design. See below for a list of current advisory council members. The purpose of South’s CTE Advisory Committee is to ensure that the curriculum meets State standards, and to assure program continuity with students and staff. Student satisfaction is important to the entire program and the committee continually looks for ways to gain a long-lasting satisfaction level. The quality education of each high school student in a CTE classroom is the ultimate goal for the Advisory Committee. The group focuses on program improvements and working to have each teacher candidate fully qualified to apply for CTE Teacher Certification, prepared to walk into a high school classroom ready to teach courses preparing each student to succeed in today’s workplace. Helen Andrews
Helen Andrews - Bellevue School District CTE Teacher, South CTE Program Completer
Helen Andrews joined the staff at Bellevue High School in 2011. e teaches business and social studies courses including Personal Finance, AP Economics, Accounting and the Microsoft Office Specialist certification course. At Bellevue High School Helen is involved as a lead-teacher supporting teachers of ELL students, she also advises the BHS mock trial team. he completed the CTE certification program at South Seattle in 2015. Before teaching, Helen was an analyst and portfolio manager in the Trust Investments Group at Wells Fargo Bank. She has a B.A. in history from Mount Holyoke College, M.B.A. from Foster School at the University of Washington, Master in Teaching from Seattle University, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst professional designation. A career highlight was serving in the inaugural Education Advisory Group for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco with 24 teachers from across the 12th district. Helen has served on the South Seattle Advisory Board since 2015.
Earl Bergquist
Earl Bergquist - Seattle School District CTE Teacher, South CTE Program Completer
Earl Bergquist currently teaches computer science classes at Garfield High School including Advanced Placement CS & Introduction to CS and coaches their First Robotics team. He joined their staff in 2011 and the year prior completed the CTE certification program at South Seattle. Earl also serves as Vice President of the Puget Sound Computer Science Teachers Association (pscsta.org). Before teaching, Earl was a computer engineer for 25 years, most recently managing a software quality assurance team at Amazon.com for 11 years. In the 1990’s he created databases and managed IT for a local non-profit, the Chicken Soup Brigade, and started his career designing VLSI computer chips for Hewlett Packard. Earl received dual BS degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2011.
Glenn Block
Glenn Block – Industry Representative
Glenn Block has over 20 years in the tech industry, currently Director of Product Management for Webtask, a local tech startup. Previously at a variety of smaller companies and 8 years at Microsoft. Glenn has a demonstrated regular interest & commitment to education: President of the board for a small private school for 2 years; serve computer science advisory board for his daughter's school; TEALS Volunteer / TA for High school Computer Science classes locally; Advisor to Jewelbots, a startup focused on attracting young girls to STEM. He has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2017.
Geoffrey Gilmore
Geoffrey Gilmore - Northshore School District, CTE Teacher, South CTE Program Completer
Geoffrey Gilmore currently teaches English & business courses at Inglemoor High School. He joined the staff in 1997. Previous to that time, he taught English, social studies, learning center classes and modern dance at Canyon Park Junior High School, starting in 1980. His teaching career commenced at Lincoln High School in East Los Angeles in 1977. Geoffrey attended California State University at Los Angeles where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1975 and a Master’s degree in Education with a focus on gifted education in 1980. Geoffrey is also a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT). He is also the owner of Geoffrey Gilmore Signature, an award winning event design/planning company. He has earned the distinctive Certified Special Event Professional (CSEP) designation from ISES. Geoffrey is the winner of the 2006 Applause Award for “Best Non-Profit Event under $25,000” and one of ten 2007 national finalist for his innovative design of a couture dining table setting for the 2007 “The Special Event” Conference in Los Angeles. He is also the winner of the 2008 Applause Award for “Best Achievement in Logistics” and the winner of the 2009 ISES Esprit Award for “Best Industry Contribution.” He has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2009.
Nancy Hawkins
Nancy Hawkins – Retired CTE Director Federal Way School District
Nancy Hawkins is recently retired from Career & Technical Education, having served as CTE Director in the Federal Way School District. She was a Family & Consumer Sciences instructor for many years in the Seattle, Highline, Renton and Federal Way School Districts, and has served as an adjunct professor at Seattle Pacific University. Ms. Hawkins has a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from SPU and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Washington. During her career she also served as a state consultant for FACS and worked with staff at OSPI to offer technical assistance to teachers across the state. Her work in that capacity included supervising and monitoring FACS teacher interns. She is excited to be involved in a program that is training teachers for service in CTE classrooms where students are being prepared for an ever-increasing variety of careers. She has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2015.
Debora Porter Koenig
Debora Porter Koenig – CTE Director Snohomish School District
Debora Koenig is currently the Snohomish School District Career and Technical Education Director. Prior to joining Snohomish, she worked for Monroe Public Schools as a CTE Teacher on Special Assignment since 2007, and Marketing Education, Work Base Learning Coordinator and DECA advisor since 2002. She is a member of the Northern Region WAVA Group and serves on the WAVA CTE Director Internship Committee. She is also a member of the Future of Flight Teacher Advisory Board. Debora graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science and holds a master’s degree from Central Washington University in FACSE-CTE Specialty. Prior to entering education, she worked in the insurance and sales industries for 17 years. She has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2015.
Susan Longstreth
Susan Longstreth, Ph.D. - South CTE Instructor, Retired CTE Director, OSPI
Dr. Susan Longstreth has been an educator in Washington, Colorado and California for over 30 years. She was trained as a respiratory therapist, and served as a community college instructor in RT before attending graduate school at Colorado State University. After receiving a M.Ed. and PhD in Vocational Education Administration, Sue spent 10 years at Front Range Community College in Ft. Collins, CO. as a program director and associate dean. In 1994, she returned to her home state of Washington as Executive Director of the State Council on Vocational Education, and moved to Bremerton in 1998, as the director of the district’s Career and Technical Education programs. In 2008, Dr. Longstreth joined the Marysville School District as the Director of CTE. Sue retired from educational administration in July, 2013. She is an adjunct faculty member at South Seattle College and Olympic College in those schools’ Plan B CTE teacher training programs, and most recently served as the Interim State Advisor for Washington HOSA (future health professionals). She has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2005.
Thomas Mosby
Thomas Mosby, Ph.D. - Highline School District Director of Professional and Technical Education, South CTE Instructor
Dr. Thomas Mosby is the Director for Career and Technical Education in the South Kitsap School District. Thomas also serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Career and technical teacher’s certification program South Seattle as well as being an adjunct faculty member for the University of Phoenix and Argosy University, Seattle. He has been involved in public education at the elementary, middle, secondary and post secondary levels as a teacher, counselor, coach and administrator for 24 years. Thomas graduated with a BA in journalism public relations from Western Washington University in Bellingham, a Master’s in education counseling psychology and a doctorate in education administration and leadership, both from Washington State University in Pullman. He has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2005.
Tammy H. Price
Tammy H. Price - Everett School District CTE Teacher, South CTE Instructor, South CTE Program Completer
Tammy H. Price has been teaching Floriculture, a Career and Technical Education course since 2002 at Everett High School in Everett Public Schools and as an occasional summer course at Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center in Mukilteo. She completed her CTE Teaching Certification at South’s program in 2007. Tammy has served on South’s Professional Education Advisory Committee since 2007. Her previous work experience included 12 years in the floral industry as a floral designer and flower shop manager. She has an AS in Horticulture from Louisiana Tech University, a BA in Culture/Literature/Arts from UW-Bothell, as well as a Master's degree in Educational Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching from Boise State University where she was invited to join Kappa Delta Pi an Honor Society for outstanding educational professionals. She has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2007.
Nicholas Washburn
Nicholas Washburn – Industry Representative
Nicholas Washburn graduated from UW with a Bachelor in Business Administration and has over 10 years experience as a software developer and all aspects of project life-cycles. He has worked in Healthcare for much of that time managing data systems for hospitals, and is currently employed as a Microsoft contractor on a game development project. He has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2017.
George Wheeler
George Wheeler - Highline School District CTE Teacher, South CTE Program Completer
George Wheeler has more than twenty two years’ experience teaching middle and high school science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). George teaches STEM & Career and Technical Education courses at the Highline CHOICE Academy in Burien, WA. He joined the staff of CHOICE Academy in 1997. George received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and an Education Certificate from Washington State University. He also holds a Master of Science Degree in Instructional Design and Technology. He completed his Career and Technical Education certification program here at South Seattle College. George is an experienced and respected educator, instructional leader, grant writer, tinkerer and self-proclaimed science geek. He brings his passion for teaching to the classroom by creatively integrating innovative technologies and instructional strategies that motivate students and foster success. He has served on the South Seattle College Advisory Board since 2015.
