Legal Issues - Rights and Responsibilities Online

This course introduces you to school law and educational policies including covering such subjects as: FERPA, curriculum, student free speech rights, student discipline, EEO, students with special needs, federal, state and local statutory rights of teachers, teacher employment, collective bargaining, and related educational policies (state, local, district). It will also discuss and provide insights and understanding of issues related to abuse including (but not limited to) identification of physical, emotional, sexual and substance abuse; information on the impact of abuse on the behavior and learning abilities of students; discussion on the responsibilities of teachers to report abuse or provide assistance to students who are the victims of abuse; and methods for teaching students about abuse of all types and its prevention. 30 clock hours will be awarded for successful demonstration of course competencies. (No textbook for this course.)

Please read:  Information to log onto Canvas will be sent out a week prior to the start of the class (January 14). The instructor will make the classroom live the Sunday before the class begins. Students are expected to log on first day of class to see the syllabus, but do not have to log on at a specific time. Students will have weekly assignments that require them to log on to the Canvas site a minimum of 2-3 times a week.
